Your Social Media Handle is now required for US Visa Applications

If you have not been conscious of what you post on your social media before, be it on Instagram, twitter, Facebook or otherwise, it’s time to be conscious because you’ll now have to provide your social media details for Visa Applications.

US now require virtually all visa applicants to provide their social media account names for the past 5 years. This is a vast expansion of the Trump administrations enhanced screening of potential immigrants and visitors.

Visa applicants

You’ll submit your social media usernames, previous email addresses and phone numbers. The change, which was proposed in March 2018, is expected to affect about 15 million foreigners who apply for visas to enter the United States each year.

According to US,

“National security is our top priorities… We are constantly working to find mechanisms to improve our screening processes to protect U.S. citizens, while supporting legitimate travel to the United States.”

If you are planning to travel out of this country then you should be mindful of what you post on your social media handles.

  1. It’s ok only if used for the intended purpose. Can’t the comment section be interactive? Just a suggestion.

  2. Maybe with this new rules for US visa, social media insults will reduce. Atleast before you post nonsense, you’ll think twice because someday, somehow even your employer will ask you for your social media handle before you’ll be employed. Good move, I must say.
