WhatsApp on iOS will soon start showing adverts to users

We earlier reported that WhatsApp is planning to serve advert on its instants messaging app last month and it appears, ads serving is already in works and iOS users will be the first to receive the update.

It has already been confirmed that the chat app is planning to run ads inside the Status tab of the app. To recall, ‘Status‘ is the second tab you see in your WhatsApp window right between the ‘Chats‘ and ‘Calls‘ tabs. Similar to Snapchat Stories features, photos or video posted inside Status disappear after 24 hours.

What remains unclear at this point, however, is if these ads will be targeted. After all, WhatsApp messages are encrypted, which means Facebook cannot use them to mine data on users.

This feature is still in testing phase, and it’s just a matter of time before iPhone users start seeing ads and then Android users.

  2. Thanks Prof for always looping us in, great report. As for the ads not being targeted, I think the data leakage of facebook was a wakeup call to all concerned. That the ads are limited to the status page is tolerable for now, not us all are fans of that feature anyway
