Nigeria Internet Service download speed is one of the slowest in the World

The quality of the Internet services offered to about 120 million users in Nigeria appeared to be retrogressing as confirmed by a report that the country’s download speed has gone from bad to worse in the last three years.

Specifically, a UK-based price comparison website, Cable, revealed that the Nigeria’s Internet download speed is one of the slowest in the world. According to the report, the country’s Internet download speed ranked 177th of 207 countries measured globally.

The report further showed that it takes an average of over seven minutes (7:18) to download a High Definition (HD) movie of 5GB in Nigeria as against Taiwan’s less than eight seconds and Madagascar’s 30 seconds. This result was arrived at, after conducting 172,881tests on 43,918 Internet Protocols (IPs) in Nigeria in 2019. It decreased by -16.23 per cent between 2018 and 2019.

The report noted that Nigeria’s Internet download speed has deteriorated in the past two years from 95th in 2017 to 177th in 2019.

Despite claims by service providers to offer Nigerians 4G, even 4G+ (whose speed is supposed to be very high) coupled with the avalanche of submarine cable system, about five at the shores of Nigeria that boast of 40Tbps international capacity, the download speed is still very low.

Though Nigeria is still one of the countries that offer cheap data services maxed behind slow internet connection. You can confidently turn on your glo internet connection to download a file of about 200MB, hit the download button, quickly rush to the bathroom and come back; your data will still be intact.

According to the reports… Africa is a long way behind the rest of the world when it comes to broadband provision, relying primarily on wireless (WiMAX, 3G, 4G) connectivity rather than cables to cover its vast spaces.

The question is do we really have 4G network in Nigeria? It looks like a scam to me. How may minutes will it take you to download a High Definition (HD) movie of about 1.2GB?

Also let us know the slowest network in your current locations.

  1. Spoiler alert!
That is nothing new , we pay more than most and are delivered the worst imaginable. Image a 2G data subscription, only in Nigeria is such heard of. Who the heck uses 2G? the answer Naija. Another cause for shame…
    Thanks for the info Prof

  2. That’s why I said we need 5G in Nigeria so we can get at list upto 4g speed. Mtn highest speed is just 1 or 2 mb/s. Sometimes it may increased upto 5 or more mb/s, but always dropped to 1 or 2mb/s. Airtel hardly give more than 1mb/s . However am always happy whenever am getting upto 1mb/s when downloading. I know they are all scam. Tout comme le pays

  3. I think Airtel is still trying more than all the telcos, cos I can reasonable download a file 2gb within 5minutes here in my location but the data zap like mad.
This statistics makes shame to be caching me.

  4. Our so called 4G LTE is just to kill our battery.. Imagine downloading a 200mb file for 30 minutes … Airtel is better in area while only glo Edge is better then their so called 4g
